FBI Investigating After Trump Campaign Says It Was Hacked (thehill.com) 75

Over the weekend, former President Donald Trump's campaign said that it had been hacked, with internal documents reportedly obtained illegally by foreign sources to interfere with the 2024 election. While the Trump campaign claimed that Iran was responsible, it is unclear who exactly was behind the incident. The FBI said it was aware of the allegations and confirmed Monday that it is "investigating this matter." The Hill reports: U.S. agencies have thus far failed to comment on the claims that Iran was responsible for the hack, even as recent intelligence community reports have noted growing Iranian efforts to influence the U.S. election. "This is something we've raised for some time, raised concerns that Iranian cyber actors have been seeking to influence elections around the world including those happening in the United States," John Kirby, the White House's national security communications adviser, told reporters Monday. "These latest attempts to interfere in U.S. elections is nothing new for the Iranian regime, which from our vantage point has attempted to undermine democracies for many years now."

A report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released last month noted Iranian efforts designed to "fuel distrust in U.S. political institutions and increase social discord." "The IC has observed Tehran working to influence the presidential election, probably because Iranian leaders want to avoid an outcome they perceive would increase tensions with the United States. Tehran relies on vast webs of online personas and propaganda mills to spread disinformation," the report states, including being particularly active on exacerbating tensions over the Israel-Gaza conflict.

This is just step 1 of building a story about how the election was stolen.

    Possibilities, roughly in order:

    1) Trump's team released it to get media attention

    2) Trump's team released it as propaganda laying groundwork for another seditious assault on the government

    3) Putin ordered to be done in a way that lays blame on Iran to sow chaos

    4) Putin ordered it done and they messed it up but it worked out like #3

    5) China did it

    6) Iran did it

      • Nah, it happened. The press was sent documents. The question is was it really a hack or was it a Trump 'op'. He has a long history of trying to fake out the press for self promotion.

50/50 the email address the documents came from was David.Dennison@hotmail.com or something. Or maybe John Barron, or John Miller. Trump has a bunch of aliases he commonly uses for the purpose.

The sad thing is just how clear it is to generate a viable list like this, then provide expectations just like the ones you listed. And yet here we are, subjected to this BS nonstop until the criminal ex-President gains permanent power, or explodes trying.

This is precisely why we have criminal law and a judicial system, to protect the people from criminals like this. Merrick Garland is a colossal failure.

Actually Garland is a roaring success, you just misunderstand the job he was hired for. He was nominated because of his career-long history of protecting the rich and famous. He's doing exactly what he was hired to do, protect the powerful while taking the blame for the government's inaction.

“Russia, if you’re listening,” Trump said, “I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing.”

As usual, it's great when it doesn't happen to him.

The original story [slashdot.org] claimed the campaign was hacked, which is where the information came from. Now the story has changed to say it was one of their own staff [cnn.com] whose personal email was targeted, and that's how things got expose.

What is amusing was the original response from the spokesperson:

"These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,"

Considering in 2016 the convicted felon told his Russian handler [pbs.org] to interfere in the election by hacking Hillary Clinton's emails, them claiming an outside country is trying to interfere in the elction is like them talking about groomers when they're the ones doing [imgur.com] the grooming [tumblr.com].

It sounds like some (probably Iranians) did breach the email of convicted felon Roger Stone [cnn.com].

I'm not sure if Stone's account was the source of the docs, of phishers using Stone's account were able to compromise someone on the campaign, or if the security on Trump's campaign is simply as leaky as his administration was.

  • What are we going to find out? That he's colluding with Russia and jealous of dictators? Cheating on taxes? Fleecing his supporters? Has a criminal record? That his religious conviction is phony? That he's reckless with classified information? Sexually assaulted a woman, or a dozen of them? Isn't telling the truth about an affair? Would toss out the Constitution to keep himself in office?

There's practically nothing you could make up that isn't already proven. I challenge anybody to name something

    • That he has a functioning brain. That he gives a damn about anyone, but himself? Really embarrassing stuff about other Republicans?
    • He raped his wife.

He has a creepy sexual fascination with his daughter.

He tries to pretend that rat's nest on his head looks good.

He smears on orange paint to hide his translucent elderly flesh.

He lies about easily confirmed things.

He's fairly stupid and ignorant. ...Damn it, those are already well-known too, aren't they? But seriously, half the things Trump's been doing most of his life are so enraging you probably didn't really notice how weird he is for doing the other half. The Dems did a good job dec

      • Not that it'll ever happen in the real world - it's more likely Ivanka will come out and accuse her father of molesting her when she was young, based on things the old perv has said - but you did ask what we could possibly learn that would be more shocking than what we already know.

Finding out he molested Ivanka wouldn't be more shocking than what we already know. That would just be a confirmation or long-held suspicion.

          • Good point. D'ya suppose she just married Jared to piss off her dad?

While I try not to think of the Trump family and motivations, I have to think if I was her at least 95% of my time would be occupied with trying to find ways to piss off Dad in just the right way to get him to back off, not the right way to get him to cut ties. Though I might have wanted to cut those ties during my teen years just out of the ick factor alone.

    • That he shot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue?
  • "Should have hired me instead, assholes!"

  • One wonders just how hard they'll work on this - but, then, perhaps the assigned agents are more professional and mature than The Orange One himself is.

  • found no wrong doing. Nothing to see here.
  • his personal email in the FBI's hands.

Promising costs nothing, it's the delivering that kills you.
