Political Protests Are Now Happening in Videogames (forbes.com) 184

Business Insider reports that some players are adapting their avatars in the game world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement in the real world: In "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," players are creating customized signs and clothing for their game characters that say "BLM" and depict symbols of "No justice, no peace...." Anyone with access to a Nintendo Online account can host an online protest in the game; one such virtual protest was held on June 7.

As there's a limit of only eight players allowed to be on another player's island at a time, interested players were directed to a site which put folks in line to gain access. When the player's turn came, they were given a special code needed to enter the island. The protest host made customized signs, pillows, and memorial photos, and carved out a special path and area on their island to hold the sit-in protest. Players were encouraged to bring in-game currency (also known as bells) to the island, which would be converted into a charity donation by the host in the name of the player who contributed. This protest raised money for six different charities. including the NAACP, the National Bail Fund Network, and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Meanwhile, Forbes reports: Roblox, a popular game among children and early teens that announced 100 million active players last year, has become a small-scale battleground in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections. The BBC is reporting that hackers are taking over accounts to spread pro-Trump propaganda, dressing them up in red hats like Trump supporters and putting pro-Trump messages in profiles...

There are ton of posts on social media from players who say that their accounts have been hacked, and Gamespot notes that since Roblox accounts are indexed by Google, it's easy to see a ton of accounts featuring the same message in the "about field": Ask your parents to vote for Trump this year!#Maga2020. A search on Google yields about 1,800 results... They also appear to be spamming friend requests and friend lists to send out pro-trump messages far beyond the single hacked account.

Every game has the feature buried some where in it. The lie it is something new, though, complete and utter bullshit.

Religion and political trolling have been around in games for years, probably decades. Annoying idiots are always popping up, select there name, choose chat and set ignore, just like that gone, poof, who cares. The symbology will be mocked and those pushing it will be ignored, screaming into the win, the message ignored, usually after a solid round of trolling, twisting and attacking the message they are pushing.

It does not work, not even a little, people are just annoyed by it and like to tease the fuck out of the people pushing this bullshit before setting them to ignore. They play games to escape reality, trying to push reality down their throats, especially a bullshit reality, does not work. Reality is black lives matter has simply become too annoying to listen to and unless they smarten up their act, they can go fuck themselves the racist arseholes.

I think the protests have shown clearly that cops will take any excuse to be violent. People literally just standing around get tear gassed or shot with rubber bullets. There's a video of a cop playing the schoolyard trick of suddenly stopping in front of a guy that's walking, and when he walks into the cop, 5 other cops jump him because now he's committed assault under some vague technical definition.

Cops use violence disproportionate to the offence a lot of the time. They shoot people that are running away. They shoot people—and a disproportionately high number of black people based on demographics—sometimes without warning. John Crawford was basically just standing in a WalMart holding a BB gun that he'd picked up in the aisle and the cops came in, yelled at him and shot him before he could even move. I mean, c'mon. The examples just go on and on.

Canada has this problem too. 30-40% of the incarcerated population is First Nations (what you call Native American), but they only make up 3-4% of the population. I have a hard time believing that they honestly commit that much crime.

But I think it's best summed up by this: "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread."

The reason why we consider racism 'institutional' is because the long standing policies of governments in North America have disadvantaged some people enough that more of their behaviours are considered criminal. People have come up with plenty of ways to reduce crime, and most of them come down to things that cost tax money (better schools, free health care, *reparations*) or things that make us confront our racist past (remediating the effects of redlining) but until now, nobody wanted to try those things because something-something-bootstraps. We KNOW how to make things better, but politicians won't actually DO them, and a lot of white people are allies right up until the moment that it costs them something.

Police brutality occurs as a result of 2 factors. 1) the person attempts to fight and flee 2) the person is perceived to be from a low income class. Growing up poor and irish, Living in the US, I saw just as many asshole cops. If it were purely racial you wouldn't see black cops just as guilty of bullying and brutality.

Where racism comes into play is that black people are more likely to be assumed low income class, even when not the case. The root cause is class warfare, not racism. Until we address the root cause, we are never going to solve the issue of police using brutal tactics. We will just have another round of appeasement.

If someone is fleeing on foot after a non-violent crime, why chase them and use potentially deadly force? Especially if you know who they are. They aren't an immediate threat to the community, so track them down a day or 2 later. Instead, we have cops shooting fleeing men in the back or chasing them down with dogs like modern day slave patrols.

It's institutional racism, combined with militarization of police and prioritization of police safety over safety of the public. The police are trained to inheren

This works both ways. Perhaps criminals should be more respectful.

Innocent until proven guilty. Until you are convicted you aren't a criminal, just a suspect.

          • That is the problem. To the police everyone is someone who just hasn't committed a crime yet.

That's not true. To the police, everyone is just a criminal they haven't yet caught.

    • Half of violent crime in the US is done by blacks.

Wrong [infogram.com]. It depends on which race you're comparing.

I did a good bit of searching until I came to the above link. It's amazing that there doesn't appear to be a fucking chart, or any sort of statistics that simply say how many actual white people committed a violent crime vs blacks that committed a violent crime. They're all done by percent of population, and to make it even stupider, they group whites with Mexican/Latinos. In the end, black people commit far more violent crimes than white people, even wh

BLM propaganda -> that's made by concerned players, very inspirational, great people aware of the suffering of blacks
Trump propaganda -> made by insane and sick hackers , allegedly paid by mafias to spread hate .

Well, As for me, it is the other way around actually.... Those spreading hate against trump supporters, ironically shout "they will not divide us" just to mislead people about the real purport

Just yesterday, a warm sunny Sunday, did I walk along the local river when a young black woman spots me, blinks her eyes, walks straight up to me and blocks my path. Me, being a white male, 50, out to keep fit, and she being probably in the twenties, short and slightly over-weight. The path we were one was more than 2m wide (>7ft). It was in the middle of nowhere, a small forest section, we were alone, no houses, no streets nearby, and she walks up to me, to a total stranger, and starts to bully me. She ignored the rules for social distancing, starred right at me from a foot away, she didn't keep to her left and instead told me to move away from here, because she now walks here. I had first thought she was going to as me for directions or the time, but I certainly didn't expect to be bullied. I didn't move away, I was intrigued by her apparent ignorant behaviour, and instead leaned calmly against a post to see where she was going with this. She didn't like my reaction to her attempt and so she walked away rambling how she has rights... I told her to fuck off and went on to continue my Sunday walk.

I could have been anybody, a rapist, a murderer, I could have had my way with her out there in the middle of nowhere. Young women usually know better not to walk alone in such areas or to draw needless attention to themselves. It's simply not smart especially with a big city nearby. People are also quite aware of the social distancing rules and you can see us Brits queuing in big lines.

So now BLM has arrived in the UK. I never cared for people's colour before, and I won't do it now. You can fuck right off if you try.
