John McAfee Released From Jail in the Dominican Republic (nypost.com) 117

An anonymous reader quotes the New York Post: John McAfee of antivirus software fame has arrived in London from the Dominican Republic, where he had been detained for several days with his wife and several others for entering the Caribbean nation with a cache of weapons on his yacht, his lawyer said Friday. Authorities "asked him where he wanted to go, and he decided on London," his attorney Candido Simon told Reuters....

While in custody, McAfee retweeted a photo posted by his wife of himself sitting shirtless in a cell... [And another shirtless photo with his cellmate.] "My crime is not filing tax returns -- not a crime. The rest is propaganda by the U.S. government to silence me..." he wrote in a July 19 tweet.

In fact, McAfee now "is laying the blame on the CIA and 'an extremely corrupt Bahamian official,'" CNET reports.

McAfee "confessed in a tweetstorm earlier this year that he hasn't paid the IRS in eight years," reports the New York Daily News, adding that this week McAfee was "essentially deported" to London. "He previously fled to Guatemala from Belize when he was sought for questioning concerning the murder of a neighbor, Reuters previously reported." Earlier this month, Reuters also reported that McAfee had again fled to Cuba "after suspecting that U.S. law enforcement was trying to extradite him from the Bahamas."

CNET also quotes McAfee as saying that he now wants to run simultaneous campaigns to be both president of the United States and Prime Minister of England. "I believe I am one of the few people stil alive who could qualify for the combined position."

Yet another murderer becomes a folk hero because he's eccentric (drug addled) and thwarts attempts by the cops to capture him. Pay the $25 million you owe to your Belize neighbor's family, John.

He'd be less embarrassing as McAfee is an intelligent, egocentric narcissist, whereas Trump is the leader of retard cult.

And yet, ever since Trump beat Hillary the Democrats have managed to make themselves look like even bigger retards.

So basically what you're saying is that the Democrats took 2nd place at the Special Olympics.

Not worse: more embarrassing. It's hard to find someone more embarrassing, but there are a lot of people who would be worse than Trump. That's really what I'm afraid of in the fallout of his administration. He's laid the groundwork for imitators, and those people are going to be just as corrupt but a whole lot smarter.

      • The biggest factor holding Trump back is his incompetence. He wants to wreck stuff but doesn't know how. Putin is clearly getting his money's worth, bringing down USA and China at the same time.

There's a prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Now if Brexit happens and is the total desaster that some expect, there might be a prime minister of England in 20 years or so. I think it's unlikely. PM of England and Wales is slghtly more likely.
    • by Anonymous Coward

He should declare himself "Emperor of the United States of the United States of America and England, Protector of Mexico".

    • There's a prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

He misspoke. What he wanted to say, was that he wanted to be the Queen of England.

If Brexit happens? I think it's a given now.
  • Its clear he is a danger to those around him. He will eventually get his ass in a crack he can't slither out of.

  • You would think he would be broke by now after all his clownish adventures. Does anyone have any idea what his net worth currently is?

Pretty sure he was the majority shareholder in McAfee, which became Network Associates, which was then sold to Intel. The sale to Intel was worth north of $7 billion. Even if his shares were diluted from all of the mergers, he probably still made a ton of money from the sale alone, not to mention all the dividends paid out over the years.

You're on the run from america, and you decided to go to the place that kept Assange under house arrest for 10 years to give him up to them?

    He really is on drugs.

    • I was going to suggest you are almost as deluded and John and Julian, but Boris has managed a step change in that scale.

    • Assagne was not under house arrest, he was living as a guest in the Ecuadorian embassy. The UK authorities had not put him there, on the contrary they wanted him out of there. But perhaps McAfee is intending to head there as presumably they now have a vacant guest room. We have heard that McAfee eats shit so perhaps he could clear up the shit that Assagne left in there.

I’m surprised they think they can squeeze both of their egos into one room.

  • What idiot thinks not filing taxes is not a crime? Just because the government usually lets it slide, does not mean it isn't a crime.

People go to jail for it. Even if you don't owe taxes, but I bet he owes a lot of taxes, which makes the crime not paying taxes.

"What idiot thinks not filing taxes is not a crime?"

Those of us that understand tax law and know that if you don't make more than a certain amount a year, filing IS NOT REQUIRED.

In John's case, with the money we know he has, he fucked up by not filing, and is thus evading taxes, not avoiding them.

      • Did he actually have income during that time period? If he took his money 8+ years ago and bought stocks, bonds, crypto coin and never sold it, he doesn't even have to file. No income, no filing.

    • If you make less than $10k in a year, it's not required.
      • by tomhath ( 637240 )
But if your investment income is over $1k you must file. His net income is anyone's guess but it wouldn't surprise me if paying his back taxes will bankrupt him (at least until he can sneak out of the country and get to money he has hidden somewhere).
        • Would it surprise you if he is literally losing money every year?
          • He would only lose money if he actually filed tax returns, because without doing that you don't have those wonderful deductions which rich people use.

            • lol while deductions can help you lose money on paper, John Macafee is the kind of person who can make investments that actually lose money every year.
          • by tomhath ( 637240 )

Would it surprise you if he is literally losing money every year?

His net worth was estimated to be $100M at the peak of the bubble. By 2009 it was something like $4M. So the answer to your question is "No". A half decent accountant could show him losing millions every year for the rest of his life.

      • by Livius ( 318358 )

If you make less than $10k in a year

        That's quite a big 'if'.

Multiple failures to file, or failure to file if ordered to, or any kind of misrepresentation of income is probably going to come under criminal offences.

    • Not *paying* taxes is a crime. If you're paid up through quarterlies or withholding, you technically don't to file a return. The problem is that the government will likely estimate your liability in a way that's unfavorable to you (i.e. reported income with no deductions), so you almost certainly want to file.
    • America charges you (American Citizen) taxes even when you live and work exclusively in a (not America) foreign country. Even if you have NO Amerian income or assets.

Too late: Some fat guy with a shock of disheveled blonde hair has already claimed both positions.

  • Before leaving for London, didn't he check out the minibars in any hotel that he stayed? That might have saved him the trouble of going anywhere

Also, if he fled to Cuba and wanted to be out of reach of the US, shouldn't he have simply stayed in Cuba? Instead of going to the Dominican republic, and that too w/ a cache of weapons?

  • He has strange delusions.
  • Hopefully straight to the looney bin.

My opinion of McAfee's intellect & grip on reality has just nosedived completely.

You don't "run for Prime Minister". Even IF he managed to convince every party besides the Tories to support him in a desperate attempt to derail Brexit at the last minute (itself a position he'd be unlikely to take) after a no-confidence vote, he'd still have to get Betty's stamp of approval. And wouldn't, even though she'd be committing dynastic suicide by refusing to grant it.

  • Well you can't say he hasn't lived an interesting life. Not exactly the type of life I would choose (well maybe the harem, eh, maybe not, too much hassle) but an interesting one none the less.
