House GOP Campaign Committee Says Its Emails Were Hacked During 2018 Campaign (talkingpointsmemo.com) 163

The National Republican Congressional Committee was hacked this election cycle, it admitted Tuesday afternoon. From a report: "The NRCC can confirm that it was the victim of a cyber intrusion by an unknown entity. The cybersecurity of the Committee's data is paramount, and upon learning of the intrusion, the NRCC immediately launched an internal investigation and notified the FBI, which is now investigating the matter," NRCC spokesman Ian Prior said in a statement.

"To protect the integrity of that investigation, the NRCC will offer no further comment on the incident." The major breach included thousands of emails from four senior aides, according to Politico, which first reported the hacks. An outside vendor noticed and alerted the committee in April. The committee then launched an internal investigation and alerted the FBI.

Weird how when the RNC is hacked, no one discovers any evidence of any wrong-doing.

Yet when the DNC is hacked, we discover that their primaries are a sham and that the results are pre-determined.

And yet I keep on hearing the left claim that the right is as corrupt as they are...

    • The GOP failed to cheat the primary system to keep a populist outsider from winning.

Perhaps it is time to go back to the days of party big wigs cutting deals in smoke filled rooms.

We already knew this about the DNC -- That was the entire purpose of the superdelegates. All you saw was behind the scenes arm twisting of them, which everyone also knew was happening because that's how politics works.

I... I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim the right is as corrupt as the left.

I'd assume the RNC let themselves be hacked, just to make a point. Such as the one you just made.

One thing we know for sure: we'll never see any of these hacked emails on Wikileaks.

    • I trust Wikileaks to do what is in their interest. Today, harming the GOP is not in their interest. Tomorrow? Who knows.

That assumes, of course, that Wikileaks has even received copies of the e-mails from whoever stole them.

No, the hacked GOP emails won't go to Wikileaks. They are being kept in a big zip file named, "Saudi/Putin Insurance Policy (1)" on a server in Chechnya that's running a pirated version of Windows NT Server 4.0.

First, this is fake news. The GOP wants to look like victims so that their mindless supporters can say, "Look! It's not Russia but some "leftists" or some such bullshit! We're being hacked by Leftists backed by Soros!!"

Second, it gives them a story, "It was those Leftists Silicon Valley people!" and fail to mention that those "leftists" were pay rolling their campaigns.

Third, the Republicans have no credibility of late. The last Republican who had any credibility died a few days ago and was atten

This is a distraction from the breaking story about possible GOP election fraud scandal coming to light in North Carolina.

The allegation is that someone on the GOP payroll was hiring people to go door to door and collect absentee ballots. This is illegal under NC law.

Additionally, those ballots passed through unknown hands, and may have been culled, substituted or otherwise altered in the process.

Not only was there a ballot collection drive in contravention of NC law, but all the statistics for the two counties in question are off against the rest of the state. More absentee ballots were requested, more were not submitted, and a higher number voted for one party than the rest of the state.

I'm sure all those voters concerned about voter fraud support immediately suspending certification of the ballot, recounting ballots, and performing a full verification of all ballots in the affected counties including prosecution of all the people accused of collecting ballots and paying people to collect ballots.

It should be noted that the GOP is opposed to any of those steps.

      • that was something like 80% Dem went the completely opposite direction. e.g. one of the Gerrymandered districts full of Democrats somehow flipped completely blue. And even with all that the Republican still only won by 965 votes...

It's pretty brazen election fraud, but it's usually up to the Fed to move in and fix that sort of thing, which given the current administration I don't see happening...

At least CNN finally [cnn.com] covered it. Albeit with a wishy washy opinion piece.
    • from that murdered Journalist.

Seriously, there is way, way too much dirt floating around about the GOP. But somehow it never seems to hurt them that much on election day...

Does the GOP need distractions? They have gone so far post-truth that shit just slides off them now. They heard Trump with his "I could shoot someone in the street and no-one would care" thing and went with it.

  • Or is it a case of "No harm, no foul"? We're so deep in the dishonesty that no one knows what to believe now, and evidence be damned, full speed ahead. Or in reverse, or maybe we should bear to starboard or larboard. "Wait, Captain, we can't dive now, the hatch is still open!" Followed by exhortations to Scotty to beam up the landing party and go to Warp 7!

    • Wouldn't be the least bit surprised to read that the Russians did it. They don't favor the GOP, they simply aim to sow distrust in any government that isn't theirs. The GOP suited their goals in 2016, but they may see things tilting the other direction and are hedging their bets.

I'm just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Also trying to find an actually humorous joke somewhere in there.

However, as regards the Russians, I doubt they would have to hack the GOP. I really think they have so many of them by the balls (starting at the head of the fish) that no hacking would be required. They would just ring someone up and ask for the passwords.

"Good day, comrade. So funny that you thought this was an unlisted phone number." Of course with a heavy Russian accent.

The evil ones. Admit they were hacked my ass, they're just drumming up conspiricy theories to attack the democrats.

Even worse, because of this I'm now expecting Trump any day to put forth the theory that this somehow means that the Democrats did not actually win the House in the recent election and the Republican victory was stolen. I live in a red state and if he does this, yes, lots of people here will believe it.

  • Let's reserve judgment until the FBI examines the servers forensically. Surely, they'll allow it, right???

  • The GOP were actively involved in cybercrimes (directly and indirectly, the distinction appealed to Al Capone but not to anyone law-abiding) against political opponents, both in office and in the general public. "Do unto others" is a serviceable motto.

My sympathy is restricted to the fact that no crime, whatever your view of the target, is ever justified, moral or acceptable. It is an abomination.
