Attitudes towards voting is actually a major distinction between liberal and conservative mindsets. I've discussed this at length with a couple of my conservative friends. Conservatives are quite happy to keep voting sorta difficult. They believe that it's a right but feel that there's no governmental obligation to facilitate it. For a lot of them, it's not a racist thing (truly).... just that you gotta work for your privileges. A very different mindset from liberals, who want as many people as possible to vote and want to make it as easy as pie.
On this issue, the liberals have it right and the conservatives have it wrong. The line between making it challenging to vote and voter suppression is too fuzzy. And stepping over the line into voter suppression is a massive hit to a governments legitimacy. The conservatives should let everyone vote easily and take their lumps if it causes them to lose.
