What made them both change their minds a month later? Certainly NOT the science because no reputable RCT's had been published about face masks and C19 after May. It was politics. The same thing that is driving Scientific American, which is not being very scientific at the moment.
I figured you were a sad troll in a basement somewhere, so I looked at your "source". What's the heading? "Nonpharmaceutical Measures for Pandemic Influenza"
And you think that applies to COVID-19 why? Are you a fucking moron who thinks it's "just a flu", or are you a shill? Because it's one or the other.
No, but if you think transmission vectors are different for the two viruses, you are the moron or shill. Repeat after me: airborne virus transmission is largely science fiction. This does not mean direct spread of droplets, eg. coughing or sneezing in someone's face, which is extremely unlikely outside of a hospital setting. Apart from that, such research would apply to both viruses: they spread in the same fashion, through touching an infected surface and then your eyes, nose, or mouth.
There are plenty of studies that show masks prevent the spread of covid. The brief of it is that the virus spreads inside of small spittle particles, and the masks stop the spittle.
But you clearly haven't looked because this has been publicized widely, and there are plenty of studies.
You are correct, however seem to have a misunderstanding of what those 'spittle particles' are. They do not float around in the air for long at all (order of seconds). You'd be hard pressed to name the last time someone sneezed directly into your face, unless you work in a hospital, which incidentally is where masks make logical sense for that reason.
and apologized, said they were wrong and moved on. That's how science works.
They were trying to prevent a run on N95 masks by stupid Americans. If we had a proper, functioning government it wouldn't have happened because a) We wouldn't have pulled our pandemic response unit out of China and b) we would have been stockpiling masks for the pandemic we knew was coming (and we knew it was coming because Biden/Obama left Trump a "Pandemic Playbook" that was ignored).
An herein lies a problem. "A boy who cried wolf" problem. Once you lie even once, your credibility is shot. You could be telling the truth but it's easy to discredit you, because if you lied once, who is to say you're not lying now and plan to apologize later if caught? Anyone who comes up with whatever conspiracy theory, no matter how crazy, now has hole to convince some people - they lied before, they are lying now because "insert whatever crazy reason you want here". True. But the virus particles are carried by droplets, which are large enough to be stopped by masks.
