When I was in high school, we were encouraged to read newspapers from abroad to get an idea of how other countries viewed the history of any given policy of the time.
My children are now studying history in US high school and are equally encouraged to read other sources than their history texts.
I went to an american high school for a year. I was the only one in the entire US history class who knew who Slobodan fucking Milosevic was (this was the year after they had taken World History..), and when I answered the question "Which former Yugoslav president is currently being prosecuted for war crimes?", I heard "Who's that?", and the kid next to me asked "How do you know so much?".
