Journal frankie's Journal: Life does not end at birth 1

As a Catholic, abortion is significant to many of my relatives and friends, even if my own position is more nuanced. This journal expands on an email I wrote last week.

Many of the faithful make abortion their first (if not only) criterion for the voting booth. If so, please consider this question: should you support someone who likes to talk tough about abortion, or should you support someone who actually prevents abortions? To put it in clear terms: Abortions increased under Bush , reversing an 8 year decline.

And don't forget the official Vatican position on political choice:

"The Christian faith is an integral unity, and thus it is incoherent to isolate some particular element to the detriment of the whole of Catholic doctrine. A political commitment to a single isolated aspect of the Church's social doctrine does not exhaust one's responsibility toward the common good."

The Catholic Church supports many political positions. Catholics should oppose abortion, the death penalty, and pre-emptive war. We are supposed to favor universal health care, labor unions, and aid to the poor. Yes, really!

Except for blastocysts, John Kerry has an excellent Catholic voting record. Think deeply, pray quietly, vote carefully, and peace be with you.
